Beach Sophistication - Longboat Key, FL
Sometimes finding the perfect penthouse on the perfect beach happens only once in a lifetime.
We were thrilled to be asked to renovate, design and furnish this beautiful property on Longboat Key, home to one of the best beaches in the world. Needing a thorough update, we completely gutted the existing spaces and created a new kitchen and bar. In addition, all baths were redesigned. Old millwork was removed and replaced with exquisite new American walnut. Floors were replaced with wide, lightly stained oak.
Various architectural changes simplified and updated the interior architecture, and a new lighting plan was created. Our goal throughout was to design a comfortable, yet stylish, residence that emphasized the spectacular views to both east and west. Generous terraces and glass doors on both sides of the penthouse allow for substantial light throughout the day, and for east to west breezes.
Most of the furnishings were custom designed and made in the US and France. Fabrics were imported from Europe, especially from Italy. Throughout the residence, Italian glass artworks and accessories were used frequently to add color and reflect light. A trip to Italy provided unusual, exceptional and vintage pieces.
Appreciating fine art, the client had us select outstanding pieces from a variety of abstract expressionist artists, such as Syd Solomon, Stanley Boxer, Yvonne Thomas and Frank Wimberley. In addition, two pieces were completed as commissions by Florida artist Bruce Marsh. “Mangroves” is a 13’ wide panel in the Living Room that brings the natural world into the space.
Two paintings by former Florida artist Bill Nichols, with water lily themes, hang in the Powder Room, also emphasizing the location of the residence. Works on paper by Parisian artist Daphne Gamble add a neutral look, and works on paper also include pieces by Melissa Meyer. Adding beautiful music to the spaces was accomplished by an outrageously gorgeous custom made Bösendorfer piano in a macassar finish.
